About Me

Hello all- thanks for taking the time to visit my amateur blog site. I am currently an active duty Soldier in the U.S. Army and pursuing my Masters Degree in Instructional, Design, Development, and Evaluation from the Syracuse University. For those that I have known from the beginning (1998-ish) to be exact, have known me as "always finding another way" to accomplish something. I think this educational opportunity will afford me the opportunity to give back to the organization that has given me so much- the U.S. Army.

Why should you use Content Management Systems?

In reading further upon the topic of Content Management Systems, I came across an article that specifically talks about why you should use a content management system for your website.

The article is by Karo Kilfeather (2018, April 5) who is from Poland and is a content manager for Percussion software.  Additionally she writes about content management, content marketing, SEO, social media and web design and how to make it less complicated.

What I envision is reading about Content Management Systems is the need for more digital content to be accessible to learners anywhere and anytime, regardless is the data is on an open content system or closed system (think Army Milsuite, or any organizations data base).

Keep in mind that before web content management software, users and authors had to rely on pages loaded directly to their servers in order to be published.  Even though some organizations continue to update websites in this fashion, it will have serious limitations on their ability to scale and improve their web presence (Kilfeather, 2018).

Here are some  reasons why you should be using a content management system.

1. If you need to give access to multiple people, then a content management system is the best way to provided access and permission to those limited personnel needing access.  Of course, these limited people provide the updates and monitor the content.

2. Content Management Systems have build in templates and reuse as many pages as you want with the same functionality on each page.  Keeps a consistent look for your website.

3. They have a governance feature which allow you to create content and publish to include customize and implement an editorial process or workflow process.  This ensures content is reviewed at all levels and approved before going live.

4. They are content focused, meaning the content management system separates your content and your design in order to allow you produce more website driven traffic rather than just content.

5. Makes it easier for you to change any information for other customers not in your traditional language- picture your from U.S. A. and have a meeting in China to present your content management system- you can change it from anywhere you have connection and access without changing to content itself.

6. Its coding free and makes the management and upkeep of your website faster to include opening content from larger groups of contributors.

7. Secured with firewalls and a decoupled content management system ensure it can't be easily exploited by those that mean harm.

8. Provides analytics  and collects data for content performance and effectiveness.  This is critical to for tracking performance and integrating third  party tools to help you.

  1. Nick,

Thank you for sharing your research on Content Management System with us. I assumed that content management system is based on social media, which allows us to contribute to create, share, and collectively develop knowledge.

I also found many tools such as dropbox and google suite allows us to work together regardless where we physically reside. This is a great way of collaborating and co-running the system.

Keep up the good work and share your findings or thoughts with us about content management system. Thank you.

  2. Dr. Moon-Heum,

Thanks you for commenting and sharing other CMS type activities that I haven’t previously thought of. Initially I was thinking CMS and the amount of data to include meta data being so robust, this requiring the need for cloud computing. That’s what I envisioned at the beginning of this course and it seems like I may be able to connect the dots with further research.

  3. Nick,
When I read your initial blog on Content Management Systems (CMS) a few weeks ago, I was a little confused and the only relate-able software that I have previously used was SharePoint. However, after reading your current blog and the article by Karo Kilfeather, I am an advocate for CMS. It is a software that is much needed in our data driven world where the network comes to a crawl when the trillion+ users are at peak usage. From my understanding, CMS assists, among many, in data management in both time and space--multiple user access for real-time changes and templates/shells to assist with data space management. And it turns out that I am currently using a CMS to maintain my blog, Wordpress. Great information, Thanks Nick.

    1. Lisa,
Absolutely correct on your assessment of CMS- and of course wordpress as a CMS- additionally thinking share-point to include the Army Milsuite software. Most corporations have some type of CMS. I am making the connection to include blackboard as a CMS and another type of CMS, but only it is a LMS or learning management system. There has been so many advancements in technology and meta data that needs to be digitized...which will lead to further discussion for the need for CMS to use the cloud, but what type of cloud is needed for a particular type of content is yet to be analyzed...stay tuned!

  4. Great post. As you know, I am still learning how to navigate the interweb with my brand new Texas Instruments TI-99/4A so please forgive my ignorant questions.

    1. What exactly is the difference between CMS and MS programs like Publisher, One Note, and the ability to now collaborate with most MS Office programs?
    2. Do Google Drive and MS Cloud provide the same service and functionality as a CMS?
    3. How similar is a CMS to the functions found in Centrix?

You have prompted me to do some research. God knows, you can never get enough research.

  5. Matt,
To answer your questions the difference between CMS and MS programs like publisher, one note, and the ability to now collaborate with most MS office programs is- I'll do my best to articulate for you. I hope I don't lose you.

A CMS is a software program that enables users or owners (authors) to upload content, manage content, or edit content. Think any corporation that has a share drive or the Army milsuite application. The difference between that and MS programs is that a individual is uploading content for work per se and collaborating with others using the same program. CMS is a software program that may or may not have those types of programs loaded into them. CMS's additionally make it easier for anyone to upload content on to the internet versus uploading them page by page onto a company's server per se.

Google Drive and MS Cloud are and have the same functionality as a CMS- in fact- the cloud is the next step (well google and microsoft) are ahead of the game because there is so much metadata that's needs to be uploaded, shared, managed, etc it uses the cloud as a infinite amount of space to do the same as what a CMS would do. So yes they are the same- in fact my next topic will dive into the need for CMS cloud management using cloud service.

  6. Great post and very interesting topic! I don't know a lot about CMS, I have a general working knowledge and know have a bigger interest since reading your blog. In fact I know of a course that could use some assistance in this department especially since the system they are / where currently using went obsolete at the end of last month. I'm going to share some thought from your blog with them to hopefully help them find something that can provide the management tools they need. Thanks for the post Nick
